QuickPrint
FAQs
Some common questions and answers related
to QuickPrint 5 are listed below.
NEW:
Why do my InDesign Master Page elements move out of position
when I do Selection Based Exports?
When you select a page in InDesign which has local elements
and master-page elements and use Selection Based Exports to
create the PDF, the local elements are able to be rearranged
to fit the required page size, but the master page elements
are locked.
The solution to this is to Ctrl-Click the page in the Pages
pallette and select Override All Master Page Items. The elements
are now unlocked, QP5 will be able to move them and the resulting
pdf will be correctly displayed.
Why do PDFs containing spot colours
with transparency not flatten correctly when QuickPrint 5
exports them to a destination that does not accept spot colours?
When an area of spot colour is converted to
process, there is a change in the overprinting behaviour that
can cause unexpected output. For example, a PDF with a solid
spot colour background has some text in front with a black
image drop shadow. The drop shadow is set to overprint, and
so overprints the spot colour background correctly. However
when the spot colour background is converted to process, the
black image effectively knocks out from the CMY plates leaving
a white area around the drop shadow. This is because of the
overprinting rules: An overprinting black image only overprints
spot plates. CMY plates are knocked out.
Workaround:
The workaround is to leave the spot colour check to be a fault
and not to fix (as it is in the supplied default check settings)
and to change the colour used in the layout application to
be a process colour. The layout application will, in the example
given above, integrate the background colour when generating
the drop shadow image.
Why does my job export without
bleed when I've chosen a full page bleed destination?
This is probably because the file has been
created using File>New Document in the
page layout application, rather than using the QuickPrint
menu. You need to input the destination details and save them,
then use the QuickPrint menu's Adjust
Page to Required Size function.
When are my images recompressed
using JPEG compression?
The default QuickPrint 5 check settings now
detect when an image has been compressed using non-JPEG compression
- for example, using ZIP compression - and recompress the
image with JPEG compression. To avoid this, you can change
the check setting PDF>JPEG Compression Used.
Some destinations explicitly forbid JPEG compression in their
mechanical specifications. This ban overrides the check settings
described, so in these cases the images are not recompressed.
When exporting to PageStore Online,
can I keep a copy of the QuickPrinted PDF?
Yes, in QuickPrint v5.0.3 and later there
is an option to do this. The option is available on a tab
called 'PageStore Online' in the Preferences
dialogue. To set the option, you need access to a User Privilege
called 'Change the PageStore Online Preferences'.
How can I make sure the page size
and bleed are correct when exporting a job to multiple destinations
with different page sizes?
When you create a job with the correct page
size for the selected destination, then add more destinations,
QuickPrint 5 will create groups of destinations which are
similar enough to accept the same finished PDF. When you Export,
QuickPrint 5 will process Group 1, then automatically update
the Active Group to Group 2.
At this point, use the 'Adjust PageTo Required Size' option
on the QuickPrint menu to change to the page size required
for Group 2. Make any necessary changes to the design, then
Export again. Use 'Accept As' or 'Send As' to ensure that
the new PDF has a different filename.
Continue in this way until all the groups have been exported.
Note: QuickPrint 5 will always move to the next group, even
if the Export is unsuccessful.
Why do I see the message 'The Quickcut
Destination Mechanical Specification conflicts with these
locally defined checks' when using the option to remove bleed
box or remove trim box in my Check Settings? I am sending
to a destination that doesn't require bleed.
This is because whenever destinations are
specified, a bleed and trim box are always added, irrespective
of whether the destination requires bleed or not. You should
only use the Remove Bleed Box or Remove Trim Box options if
you are checking PDFs with no specified destination.
Why
can't I use my customised profiles?
You should not copy and re-name profiles,
as QuickPrint 5 references their internal names, which do
not change. This means you could be storing the same profile
under two different filenames. If one copy of the profile
is loaded, QuickPrint 5 will be unable to load the other copy.
Why
can't I always drag and drop a PDF into QuickPrint 5 in Windows?
You can drag and drop a PDF into an empty
QuickPrint 5 window, but you cannot drag and drop additional
PDFs into a QuickPrint window which is already displaying
a PDF. However, you can open multiple PDFs using File>Open.
This limitation only applies to Windows. On MacOSX you can
drag and drop multiple PDFs into a QuickPrint 5 window.
What does this error message mean?
'Could not complete that operation due to a problem reported
by the pdf parsing routine. Could not get owner access to
document. Error code PDFL-pasr.'
It means you do not have permission to modify
this PDF, so your changes cannot be saved.
Why do I get a message saying 'The
Quickcut Mechanical Specification conflicts with the locally
defined checks'?
Some items defined in local checks may conflict
with a destination's requirements.
Some examples:
(1) If you enter values into the local printer marks offset
and size fields, and a destination being checked against uses
different values, a conflict fault is generated, but no indication
is given of which check is causing the fault.
(2) If a PDF which contains multiple destinations is opened
in QuickPrint and one of the destinations is missing from
the local QuickPrint database the message also appears, even
though this is not really a conflict problem.
I get an message saying 'Error interrogating
PDF'. What does this mean?
If the message concludes 'The file is damaged
beyond repair', it probably means the PDF has been corrupted,
usually as a result of being transmitted by email or http
transfer. It is not feasible for QuickPrint to repair the
file, as this could change the appearance of the job. The
solution is to re-transmit the original file.
If the message concludes with lines of code,
then it is most likely an error raised by the PDF library.
This usually means the PDF being validated contains information
not allowed in PDF documents or the PDF has been badly created.
These errors usually prevent a scenario where the file would
fail at production, though it may have otherwise passed validation.

Why do some of my settings change
when I move to another field or try to save my changes?
Your input is checked for validity when you
leave the field in which you typed it. If you have entered
a number which is too large or too small, it will be changed
to the closest allowable value. If the value affects other
numerical fields, they may also be adjusted to ensure that
there are no conflicting settings.
What does this check setting mean:
"Use these profiles if the destination has not selected
a profile"?
This check setting is located in Check Settings
under /Colour/Output profiles. Its purpose is to help group
multi-destination job sets. Where different ink-weights are
used, QuickPrint may assign different unseen profiles, which
can prevent the grouping of similar destinations. Ticking
this check setting will override the unseen profiles, allowing
the group to be formed.
What are the graphical buttons on
the lower right side of the Job Destination Details window?
The button with a Plus sign
is the Add button. Use it to add a new job
destination.
The button with a Minus sign is the Delete
button. If you want to delete a destination, click on it to
highlight it, then click on the Delete button.
The bottom button, with the Arrow pointing to the
right, is the Save button. Use it
to save the destination details for the job into a .tic
file.
The other button, with the arrow pointing to the left,
is the Load button. Use it to load destination
details which have been set up for a previous job and saved
in a .tic file. You can either add the destination(s)
in the file to any existing destinations (Append),
or use the destination(s) in the file to replace any existing
destination details (Replace).
Where can I put profiles which we
or our clients have generated, and which are not supplied
by QuickPrint?
Place them in a 'Generic' profiles folder
on the following path:
folder containing quickPrint.DB/Profiles/Destination/Generic
Profiles in the Generic folder are never deleted by QuickPrint
when it updates data.
I get an error message when installing
on Mac OS 10.2.6. The message reads: 'Quickprint failed to
mount due to error 95'.
QuickPrint 5 requires Mac OS 10.2.8 or later,
as advised in the System Requirements section of the Installation
Guide for Macintosh and Windows.
I receive an error message which
reads 'The Quickcut database is currently in use by another
user'. However I'm the only user logged into my machine and
no else is attempting to access the database across the network
This may occur on the Macintosh if the database
has been placed in a folder to which a second user does not
have write permission. Changing the permissions on the folder
should resolve the problem.
When I launch QuickPrint on Windows
using the Job Details/Export option from InDesign, two QuickPrint
icons appear in the task bar but no windows are drawn
This can happen if you had a pre-release version
of QuickPrint 5, the new version has been installed for you
by an administrator, and your copy has not yet been authenticated.
To solve the problem, launch QuickPrint 5 from the Start menu.
The Authentication dialogue will appear, and you can then
authenticate your copy of the application.
When I untag ICC-based colours,
why are my ICC spot colours still tagged?
If ICC based colours are untagged, the colour
alternates for spot colours are not automatically untagged.
If you want them to be untagged, go to 'Spot Colour Alternate
Not Process' and select 'Convert Spot Colour Alternate Using
Conversion Settings'.
